Nebraska Punk Band Channels Nirvana Sounds

May 26, 2009 Melissa Kucirek

AneurysM is a three-piece band that hails from the Lincoln, Neb., area. They recently sat down for a face-to-face interview to discuss their music and performance art.

Having little regard for staleness, and even less respect for a life less ordinary, the band AneurysM tows the messy, Punk music line. With such songs as “Midol,” “Misery,” “Iodine” and “Macho,” AneursyM takes anger, boredom and depression, and channels it to positive art at its loudest form.

They're a bit rowdy on this day - sitting down for an interview. They all want to talk at the same time, but slowly a leader emerges.

Nirvana Influence

AneurysM is the brainchild of Alekx Fangman, a charismatic singer-songwriter. The Ashland, Nebr., native’s affinity for the iconic sounds of Nirvana, Motley Crue, The Beatles – to name a few- kindled his musical fire. Fangman’s voice is eerily clear; his guitar riffs blasting with energy in such Nirvana covers “Love Buzz” and “Aneurysm.”

What is Art?

“Art to me is the freedom of oneself from an attached body,” Fangman contends. “Art is everything—it comes from the soul. As long as it makes you happy, lose yourself in it. “

Fangman's serious demeanor and instant rapport continued, as he shares his interest for painting and the works of Spanish artist, Goya. Fittingly, as Fangman's deep brown eyes share that same mysterious pigment found in Goya's masterpieces.

Audience is Fourth Member

Fangman recruited bassist, Steven Cline, and drummer, Cody Heinke, to round out the outfit’s arresting lineup. Cline, who hails from Lincoln, Neb., handles throbbing chords with clean attention – never disruptive. Mead, Neb., native Heinke, erupts the wall of sound dramatically.

Cline, a sarcastic creator is trying to be subtle in his appearance. His long hair wisps around his eyes like rockers of yesteryear - Anthrax or Pantera. Then there's Heinke, a charmer nearing the end of his teen years. His curls are in ringlets the size of guitar nobs. His jokes a bit on the goofier side.

"My hair isn't normally like this," Heinke said. "I'm in a play for school - I'm in 'Alice in Wonderland.'"

He plays the King of Hearts.

This quirky trio’s live shows are a bouncing journey, as the band navigates its set list of covers and originals.

“We’re spontaneous live,” Fangman says. “No song is played the same way. You’ll see a new band every time.” Adds Cline, “Most songs form through improvisation.”

“The audience is the fourth member,” Fangman says.

AneurysM works towards a full tour itinerary this summer and beyond. "My goal in life is to make music and be happy," Fangman said.

The interview ended and the band wanders off just as happily and full of character as they entered.
